Set in a stunning location in a natural amphitheatre on Bulbarrow Hill, it’s hard to believe that the Dorset Midsummer Music Festival (also known as DorsetFest) was started in 2014. This is only our fourth festival and we’ve been lucky enough to have an amazing line up of artists, children’s entertainment, food and drink. Dorset Midsummer Music Festival 2017 will see us use the experience from previous years to make the festival an even better day out for all the family.
The music is key and we’ve been so overwhelmed by the interest that we have decided to open the festival on Friday night (23rd June) for campers and locals to come and enjoy a great evening of FREE entertainment with The Threetles and DD Allen! The Threetles are a local Blackmore Vale trio who started as a Beetles tribute band, but have since extended to cover the hits from the 60s and 70s. DD Allen caught the ear of James Blunt, resulting in a support slot on the Bournemouth leg of the Moon Landing arena tour in 2014 and has since gone from strength to strength. The bar will also be in full swing serving delicious beer from Cerne Abbas Brewery, along with food from the BBQ and Fish & Chips, so why not start the weekend early by joining us on the Friday night?
The Saturday (24th June) line up gets even stronger. We’re delighted to welcome an old favourite back. Lionstar have offered us incredible support in helping us to get to where we are with their unique style and experience of some of the biggest music festivals in the country such as Glastonbury.

As you’d expect there’s also new blood and this year we’re delighted to announce that we’ll also have Ben Waters and his six-piece band at DorsetFest 17. Ben’s a local musician with a global reputation, having worked with legends such as The Rolling Stones, Ray Davies, Chuck Berry, Jools Holland, Jerry Lee Lewis and many, many more. Ben’s gone out of his way to make time for DorsetFest 17 in his incredibly full diary so we’re delighted and grateful.

So there’s already a great line up to enjoy, but we can’t release all our treats at once. Why not watch our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram accounts as we share more information on the bands so far and announce more great music for you to enjoy on the day.
We also pride ourselves on being a family friendly event. Included in the price of the ticket is FREE children’s entertainment from great entertainers like Bugfest, Jamie Jigsaw and Hoop On. If you’re brave enough you can get close up to the selection of snakes, spiders and insects that Bugfest bring with them and learn more about these misunderstood creatures. If that’s not your cup of tea, learn a new skill (or just sit back and enjoy) with Jamie Jigsaw’s circus workshops. Fire juggling, stilt walking, balloon animals and much more, Jamie will keep you…oh and your child…entertained throughout the day. Alternatively you can take part in the Hoop On hula hoop workshops to work off some of the great food and drink everyone will be enjoying.
There's lots more too for a small cost. You can release the inner beast with a bit of face painting. Get into the festival spirit with henna tattoos. Or even create that personal gift on the day with Creative Clay.
Examples of the family entertainment at DorsetFest 16
To make the most of the day you can treat yourself with food and drink from around the globe.
There's food for all the family. Fresh wood-fired pizza from Forno Pizza. American inspired fare from the Chuck Wagon Kitchen. Fresh bread and Ploughman's from the award winning Orchard Bay Bakery. Hog Roast from The Ansty Herd. Thai from Fai Thai, amongst many others like BBQ, fish & chips and baguettes.
This can be washed down with award winning Langham Wines, Pimms, Cider By Rosie or real ale from the Cerne Abbas Brewery, with coffee to re-energise you from Routes Coffee.
There will also be sweet treats on the day with our own DorsetFest cream tea and cakes, New Forest ice cream from Super Scoops and milkshakes, smoothies and waffles from Mooies Milkshakes

For those looking to browse, we have some great artisan stalls. Award winning artist Marilyn Allis who's featured on TV will be at DorsetFest 17 with her distinct artwork. Marilyn will be alongside other great stalls that include Jillyflower Jewellery, African inspired British designed clothing from Ages Apparel and handmade Dorset Sam’s Fudge. Whether you’re looking for something a bit different “off the shelf” or a completely personalised commission, we recommend you take a stroll to see what catches your eye.
With so much to enjoy, why not make a weekend of it in this beautiful location on the slopes of Bulbarrow Hill? The ground’s relatively flat (by Dorset standards anyway) and there will be toilets on site (though no showers). Whether you’re planning to glamp in a campervan or rough it with a bit of wild camping, staying overnight allows you to enjoy the whole festival.
It just leaves us to say all well behaved dogs (on leads), kids and grown ups are welcome the help us all enjoy a great day.
Tickets are limited for both the festival and for the camping so we recommend you book early to avoid disappointment.
